Area Attractions
Fishing, water skiing, boating, swimming, picnicking, camping and hiking are just SOME of the myriad of activities from which you can select if you want to play at the lake. Owned and operated by Georgia Power Company since 1979, the 19,050 acres of water and 374 miles of beautifully wooded shoreline (235 miles in Greene County) are no secret any more. Being identified in sports magazines as one of America's 20 HOTTEST BASS LAKES, with 34 pounds of Largemouth bass per acre, Lake Oconee has brought anglers from all corners of the Nation to try in our waters. To quote Bass master Magazine. "...with more than 1200 acres of standing timber, endless miles of rip-rap, a mind boggling amount of bass-holding deep-water structure, an abundance of productive and shallow water cover, several consistent creeks and aquatic vegetation, it has something to suit the favorite fishing style of every visitor." Lake OconeeLike Lake Sinclair, its sister lake to the south, Lake Oconee is fed from the Oconee River, the Appalachee River and several major creeks. Both lakes are surrounded by an area rich in Georgia history with many superb examples of architecture from the state's antebellum period. Georgia Power has developed three 85-acre parks on it's 19,050-acre Lake Oconee. Lawrence Shoals (706 485-5494), Old Salem (706 467-2850) and Park's Ferry (706 453-4308) all have full-service campgrounds as well as day-use areas. Each has a large picnic pavilion that may be reserved for groups of 30 or more. In addition, these parks have day-use picnic areas, equipped playgrounds, boat ramps and a beach including a beach house with bathrooms and dressing area. Lake SinclairNear the center of the state, Lake Sinclair has provided both electricity and recreation since 1953. At approximately 17,000 acres, lake Sinclair has 417 miles of scenic shoreline with charming coves and inlets as well as long stretches of open water. Lake Sinclair also is among Georgia's most popular boating areas. Georgia Power provides two boat ramps for public access to water recreation. A favorite area for fishermen at all skill levels, Lake Sinclair is the site of national fishing tournaments as well as smaller local ones. Visitors find fall and winter fishing at Lake Sinclair a special treat. Georgia Power also provides an outstanding tailrace fishing area below the dam near Milledgeville.
